Background: The vertebral column ligaments play an essential role in maintaining vertebral stability and controlling spinal motion. Calcium deposition and ossification may occur in soft tissue such as ligaments. Sometimes, an ossified ligament can cause various problems, including nerve compression and the resulting pain. In living individuals, these conditions can be diagnosed using ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). However, the identification and description of ossified ligaments in skeletal specimens have received comparatively little attention. In paleoanthropology, the recognition of pathological changes in skeletal remains is particularly important.
Case presentation: The current study presented an uncommon case involving ossification of the supraspinous ligament in a dry thoracic vertebra. This ossification resulted in the formation of a sharp, vertically oriented bony projection measuring 16 mm in length and forming an angle of 135° with the axis of the spinous process.
Conclusion: A precise understanding of anatomical variations and conditions such as ligament ossification is essential for surgeons. Furthermore, pathological evidence preserved in skeletal remains provides valuable insights into the health and living conditions of past populations.
