<abstract>
Introduction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most active articulations in human body structures and it is one of the components of the masticatory system that helps in numerous functions including speaking, chewing and swallowing.As part of the TMJ, lifelong mandibular condyles may change in morphology in response to functional loading. The aim of this study was to evaluate the size, shape, and sex-related age changes in the mandibular condyles. For this purpose, a study conducted on a sample of the central population of Iran, the dimensions of the condyle were measured .
Material & Method: In this study, measurements were performed on 70 mandibles from 35 dry skulls. Condylar size was measured on both sides.. The length of the condyle is equal to the distance from the front point to the back point of the condyle The width of the condyle is equal to the distance between the outside and the inside of the condyle the largest dimension of the mandibular condyle in the coronal plane. Measurements were performed using digital calipers (calipers) statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS Statistics Version Statistical significance was defined at P < .05
Descriptive statistics were used to determine the parameters , and T test was used to compare the right and left sizes, it used Pearson correlation coefficient and Tukey’s post hoc test were employed.
Results: In this study ,The mean of LC(length of condyle) =17.83±3.08mm (range 11.50-23.00)and W.C( width of condyle)= 6.60±165mm.( range 6.00-13.30) and G.W.C (greater width condyle)mm=7.65±1.63 ( range 5.00-13.70) .
The mean of LC(length of condyle ) were 18.12±3.21 and 17.56±2.981 in right side respectly. and W.C.is 6.55±1.12 in right side and left side is 6.63±1.99.
G.W.C .are 7.57±1.25and 7.72± 1.92 in right left sides respect ly . The LC(length of condyle) was generally more prominent than the W.C.(width of condyle)
and there were relationship age with length condyle (-.347*) and No correlatoin found between age and other parameters but was higher relationship between highest t width condyle and width condyle (.845**) . The most number of condylar shapes of mandibular are flat and convex 27%
Conclusion: The temporomandibular joint is an area that is difficult to investigate radiographically. Research on temporomandibular joint dysfunction still gives different because results caused by many factors that affect the occurrence of temporomandibular joint dysfunction or it could also be because the research has been done only to examine one cause or symptom alone.
</abstract>
